Prof. Thomas Lovejoy, Godfather of Biodiversity, passed away on Dec. 25thm 2021. Prof Lovejoy was a Distinguished University Professor of Environmental Science and Policy, the founding Scientific Director of the Institute for a Sustainable Earth. He also served as Chairman of Executive Advisory Board, Global Environment and Natural Resources Institute (GENRI) at Mason since 2013. He spent last few decades on climate change, biodiversity, and natural resources. Large wildfires impact on regional weather and climate (such as 2015 extreme drought in California) and their feedback have been becoming an interesting topic. Dr. William Sommers, a research professor at GENRI and ESTC, was interviewed by Chris Mooney from the Washington Post. COS Hosted Graduation Ceremony of Advanced Hydrology and Climate Change Workshop on 6 November 2009
On Friday November 6th 2009 the Workshop for Advanced Hydrology and Climate Change (AHCC) celebrated its first graduation after a 3-week intensive lectures, studies, heated discussions and fun. The graduation ceremony took place at the Mason Hall. The 17 graduates came from Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute (NHRI), P.R. China. All graduates have satisfactorily completed the training program and each got a certificate of recognition.

Prof. Yong Luo visited ESTC
Prof. Yong Luo, the Deputy General Director of Chinese National Climate Center (NCC or Beijing Climate Center) visited ESTC on October 19, 2009. Prof. John Qu presented the ESTC scopes and research activities regarding remote sensing of climate and environment. Dr. Luo showed high interests of future cooperation with ESTC after learning the ESTC's work on monitoring drought/soil moisture, forest disturbances, smoke and dust aerosol by using satellite remote sensing. He also met Prof. Paul Schopf, Associate Dean for Research and Computing, Prof. David M. Straus, Professor of Climate Dynamics and Chair Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Earth Sciences and Dr. Xiaoquan Zhao from Center for Climate Change Communication for discussing future collaboration between NCC and GMU on climate change studies.

Prof. Shengjie Niu, the vice president of Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology (NUIST), visited the ESTC/COS/GMU on August 11-17, 2009. It was his second GMU visiting. Prof. John Qu, the director of ESTC, warmly greeted Prof. Niu and gave a brief introduction about ESTC development and the scientific achievements.

Meteorologist from USDA-Forest Service visited ESTC
Dr. Yongqiang Liu, a research meteorologist from Southern Research Station, USDA-Forest Service visited ESTC, EastFIRE Lab during April 6-10, 2009. Dr. Liu's research focuses on smoke management and air quality. During his visit, Dr. Liu was impressed by the ESTC achievements in monitoring forest disturbances caused by hurricanes and wildland fires, and smoke and dust aerosol using satellite remote sensing. As one of Ph.D. committee members, he attended Ms. Wanting Wang's Ph.D. defense on April 9, 2009. He also discussed the potential cooperation between Southern Research Station and ESTC with Dr. John Qu, the Director of ESTC.

COS signs a MOU with the NCC/CMA for cooperative research and exchanging scientists and students
College of Science (COS) signed a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) with the National Climate Center(NCC), Chinese Meteorological Administration (CMA)about future cooperative research and exchanging scientists and students. Prof. Vikas Chandhoke, dean of Mason's College of Science, and Dr. Ziniu Xiao, Director-General, CMA/NCC, signed the MOU in early January of 2009.
